Tin Manufacture and Tin’s uses
Tin is wide utilized for the purpose of coating other types of metals mainly due to its corrosion resistance capabilities. It can also be mixed with copper to make bronze metal. The manufacturing process of tin is performed by extracting an ore named as cassiterite.
Mining is performed first in the tin manufacturing process. In the initial stage, gravel will be treated with a floating dredge and will be made to rise to the upper surface area. The gravel that has the cassiterite content will then be passed into an arrangement of filters to separate the tin and the gravel.
After the removal of tin out of the gravel, the concentrating tin with cassiterite step will be performed. In this step, the separated tin will be sent through a group of screens. In this process, the additional elements in the tin will be eliminated by a step to step process. Later, the obtained tin will be cleaned in a tank and few additional elements will be included in the tin. Hence, the tin rises on the upper surface of the water tank and gathers together forming sediment. This tin sediment will then be allowed to dry.
This dried mixture along with the additional elements will then be sent through a series of screens repeatedly to eliminate any unwanted items. After this, the smelting process will be performed. In the smelting process, tin will be heated in a furnace along with coke or oil at extreme temperatures till it turns to slag. This slag will be heated once again in a furnace to remove all the impure materials. Then, this slag will be heated again to remove the iron from the tin.
After the separation process, the obtained mixture will be heated once again, boiled and re-filtered to remove any of the extra impure materials. The tin that is obtained in this method will be extremely pure and can also be utilized for commercial purposes.
Tin is utilized as a food container in order to secure food items for a long period of time. Due to the presence of important chemical elements in tin, it is highly suitable for securing food items. Stannous fluoride is one of the forms of tin which is utilized in toothpastes. Due to the wide utilities of tin, other metals that cannot be used alone can also be mixed with tin to make them useful. Metals that are mixed with tin are commonly utilized for storing items in several key industries.
